Few morning rituals compare to a nice cup of coffee. From the smell of freshly ground beans to the rich taste, coffee awakens all of the senses and provides a much-needed boost of energy to us non-morning folks. Whether a flat white, latte, cappuccino, or espresso, coffee is always a good idea.
Luckily, Munich is filled with charming coffee shops and roasteries that will make you want to sit down and stay awhile. While there are many great coffee spots in the city, the following spots are super-cozy, with warm atmospheres that emphasize comfort. Whether you want to settle in with a book, do some journaling, or catch up on emails, these laid-back shops are the place to go. And if you’re taking a caffeine break, many also offer delicious matcha lattes, tea, hot chocolate, freshly squeezed juice, and other coffee alternatives.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the coziest coffee shops in Munich.
1. Barista Sistar

For delicious coffee, matcha, baked goods, and more, look no further than Barista Sistar. Everything in this cozy cafe tastes like it’s made with love, and it’s hard to resist ordering more than one item from the menu. Daily lunch specials like Indian curries and stews are on offer, along with breakfast staples like avocado toast and bagels.
While the cafe has a no laptop policy, it’s a great place to spend relaxing time journalling or catching up with friends. Be sure to try the homemade pistachio cake if you have a chance!
2. Cafe Lozzi
Located near bustling Sendlinger Tor, Cafe Lozzi is a delightful spot offering fresh cakes, vegan cinnamon rolls, organic fries (Pommes), and a nice selection of hot and cold drinks, including a complete coffee menu. On the weekends, they also serve vegetarian and vegan breakfast options.
Inside, the decor is rather eclectic and feels reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, with cushy armchairs and an old sofa. In summer, there’s also magical outdoor seating where you can catch up with friends under the glow of fairy lights. While Lozzi often gets quite busy and it’s difficult to find a seat at times, it’s always worth a visit.
3. Coffee Mamas

If you value quality coffee and coziness, Coffee Mamas is perfect. The cafe is typically filled with friends having lively conversations as well as people reading the newspaper or hunched over a laptop screen. Soulful tunes play across the speakers and they offer a small sampling of cakes, muffins, and paninis in addition to their well-stocked coffee and tea menu. It’s also a roastery, so you can buy coffee beans to brew at home.
The epitome of warm and cozy, this small cafe is centrally located on Lindwurmstraße, just around the corner from Theresienwiese. It’s the perfect place to write some poetry, get lost in a good book, or meet a friend you haven’t seen in years.
Note that the cafe is closed on Sundays.
4. gangundgäbe

For true coffee lovers, gangundgäbe is a must-visit. This cafe and roastery places great importance on sourcing their coffee sustainably and using gentle preparation methods to ensure it comes to life in your cup.
Their green coffee comes from Quijote Kaffee and Flying Roasters (Roasters United), who purchase the coffee directly from local cooperatives. This makes it possible for farmers in the country of origin to receive fairer prices.
The cafe’s relaxed atmosphere complements the coffee perfectly. Settle in and enjoy the soothing sound of jazz music playing over the stereo.
5. Deli Kitchen

While the name may be deceptively simple, Deli Kitchen is a hidden gem in Munich’s Obergiesing neighborhood. If you’re in need of comfort food with your coffee, look no further.
The cafe has a small but delicious menu filled with fresh salads, spinach quiche, and pasta, along with a nice selection of yummy cakes and pastries. Everything really tastes like it’s made with love. In addition to their coffee menu, you’ll also find fresh squeezed juice and a sampling of refreshing cold drinks.
On sunny days, the outside benches are the perfect place to soak up some sun.
6. Bean Batter

As the name suggests, Bean Batter specializes in two things: coffee and waffles.
Bean Batter’s ever-changing waffle menu includes classic favorites, such as the simple powdered sugar option, as well as more adventurous flavors like pineapple with salted caramel mascarpone or avocado mash with feta and egg.
Grab a coffee and kick back on the comfy sofa or grab a window seat and enjoy people watching in Munich’s laid-back West End neighborhood.
Note that Bean Batter has a no laptop policy on weekends, as the cafe gets quite busy during this time.
7. Fausto Kaffee

The smell alone will make you want to hang around Fausto, a coffee roastery located beside the Auer Mühlbach river in Munich’s Giesing district. The roastery, which is perhaps the largest independent roastery in Munich, has been around for over 15 years and is run by Klaus Wildmoser, who roasts the coffee himself.
The coffees are named for their countries of origin, and there are around 15 different varieties on the menu. All offer an exceptional experience for coffee lovers, and you may find it hard to sample just one.
If you’re interested, Fausto also offers barista trainings and latte art courses.
8. Cafe Colombo

A favorite with locals in Munich’s West End neighborhood, Cafe Colombo is the perfect place to wake up with a coffee in the morning or stop by for an afternoon pick-me-up. The cafe offers a tasty (and well-priced) menu with fresh quiche, pastries, sandwiches, and salad. (The freshly squeezed juice is also super refreshing for a sunny day).
Grab a seat by the window or one of the outside tables to enjoy some sun. Unfortunately, it’s closed on weekends.
9. Mucki & Floyd

With an atmosphere that feels a bit like grandmother’s living room (if your grandma was a bit cheeky and eclectic), Mucki & Floyd is equal parts cozy and relaxing, especially on a rainy day. The cafe and bar offers fresh coffee, the best hot chocolate with lots of whipped cream, yummy food, cakes, and a nice variety of spritzes.
As it’s located in the Glockenbach neighborhood, Mucki & Floyd is central and close to plenty of nice shops, restaurants, and attractions.
10. Man vs. Machine

Founded in 2014, this independent specialty coffee roaster has been popular with Munich coffee lovers for about a decade now. Considering the quality of the coffee and the attention to detail that goes into roasting their highest grade Arabica Coffees, it’s not surprising.
While the interior of their cafes are not the coziest on this list (sadly, there are no sofas here), the coffee more than makes up for it, and they do offer nice outdoor seating for warmer months.
Man vs. Machine has three different locations around the city, including one near the Ludwig Maximilian University on Schellingstr. and one in Glockenbach.
11. Cafe Blá

Cafe Blá describes itself as, “A friendly little corner of Munich”, and that is certainly fitting. This charming cafe focuses on roasting delicious coffee with love and care, aiming to highlight the unique flavors of the different coffee growing regions so that every cup is an experience.
They also serve breakfast and lunch options, along with sweet treats like cakes, muffins, and kakao energy balls.
Stay for the cozy interiors on rainy days, or take your coffee to go and stroll along the Isar river, which is just a stone’s throw away.
12. A Little Lost

If your train is delayed (thanks Deutsche Bahn) or you just have some time to kill near Hauptbahnhof, the main train station, A Little Lost is the place to go. As the little sister to Munich’s popular Lost Weekend, this cute cafe offers a full coffee menu, including iced drinks and delicious matcha lattes. As the cafe is completely vegan, you can choose from oat, almond, vanilla, or coconut milk for your drink.
You’ll also find a small selection of baked goods and sandwiches if you fancy a snack while you wait.
13. Little Rabbit’s Room

Part gift shop, part cozy cafe, Little Rabbit’s Room is a cute gem in the Haidhausen neighborhood, located in the picturesque Wiener Platz. The interior feels like a whimsical interpretation of a rabbit’s home, with white “trees” placed around the edges of the room. Who doesn’t want to browse through handcrafted candlesticks and eclectic greeting cards while sipping their coffee?
In addition to coffee, they also serve fresh baked cakes and pastries, avocado toast, and other savory snacks. Seating is rather limited inside, but you can always grab a spot on the bench outside, which is kissed by the sun for most of the day.
