Mmm, there’s nothing quite like a nicely made matcha latte. This creamy, antioxidant-rich drink is everywhere lately, with plenty of new spots specializing in matcha popping up around Munich. There are also many established coffee shops and cafes now offering matcha lattes on their menu.
I made the switch from coffee to matcha about a year ago and found that I’ve felt a lot better during the day. Measuring out the matcha and preparing it is a nice morning ritual that helps me feel ready to start the day. With matcha, I don’t experience the caffeine buzz and subsequent crash like I do with coffee. While a cup of matcha typically contains about 70 mg of caffeine, in comparison to 100-140 mg in a cup of coffee, the caffeine is released slower, leading to a smoother and calmer increase in energy without the jitters or feelings of anxiety many people experience with coffee. Plus, the powdered green tea is filled with antioxidants that help fight disease and infection.
However, not all matcha lattes are created equal. Depending on where you go, you can end up with a disappointing drink that’s clumpy, too milky, not tasty, or just not mixed properly. The good news is that there are plenty of places in Munich where you can enjoy marvelous matcha and even some fun twists, such as lavender syrup or marshmallow toppings. Here are some of the best places in Munich for finding your perfect match-a.
1. Neosociety

This matcha bar in Schwabing is the place to go for well-crafted drinks in a hip atmosphere, including delicious lavender- and rose-infused matcha lattes. Sit down and enjoy your specialty matcha latte on tables made from plastic bottles or linger by the sustainable products for sale along the walls.
Neosociety also offers coffee drinks, fresh baked goods like vegan banana bread, and accessories for making your own matcha at home. For example, you can find ceremonial grade matcha from the Happy Matcha brand here.
2. Letcha

Known as the first Japanese matcha cafe in Munich, Letcha has been serving amazing matcha-infused drinks and desserts since 2017. The interior of the cafe is small and cozy, with simple decorations from Japan.
Menu highlights include the Hokkaido cheesecake and salted cream matcha latte. While it’s a little on the pricier side, you can expect high quality here. Reviewers note that visiting Letcha is like enjoying tea time in Japan.
3. Suzuki Nomnom Kitchen

Fancy a little trip to Japan without leaving Munich? Suzuki Nomnom Kitchen is an authentic Japanese restaurant in the Isarvorstadt neighborhood. Since 2019, they’ve been serving delicious ramen, udon, donburi, along with desserts like matcha affogato and mochi.
You can order their yummy matcha latte hot or cold, or mix it up with the special white chocolate matcha latte with marshmallows. Their matcha is from Shizuoka, Japan.
4. Barista Sistar

There’s a lot to love about this cute little Giesing cafe, from the mouthwatering pistachio cake to the avocado toast. However, no visit is really complete without tasting their matcha latte.
The rose matcha latte is my go-to order and it never fails to brighten my day. Made with high-quality matcha and rose water, this drink has just the right amount of sweetness and flavor. Plus, it’s served with rose petals on top, which make it feel almost too pretty to drink.
5. Tushita Teehaus

A cozy tea house with traditional Japanese flair, Tushita is a must-visit for tea lovers in Munich. The tea is served in pretty, hand-crafted cups and they offer a large tea menu with many different varieties, along with fresh vegan dishes, desserts, and of course, a divine matcha latte. If you fancy eating your matcha instead, try the matcha tiramisu.
All of the tea served in the cafe is also available for purchase, so you can make your own drinks at home.
6. Orno Cafe

A sleek little spot specializing in matcha, coffee, and natural wines, Orno Cafe is perfect for those who appreciate sipping quality drinks in interiors with minimalist design. It’s frequently recognized as one of the best matcha lattes in Munich.
You can expect friendly service here and there is no extra charge for oat milk or other alternatives. Order an iced matcha latte to go and amble over to the nearby Isar river, or spend some time browsing in the design store next door.
7. Man vs Machine

While Man vs Machine is a beloved specialty roaster known for their excellent coffee, they also serve a killer matcha latte. It’s smooth and creamy, with some eye-catching latte art.
There are multiple Man vs Machine locations around Munich, including spots in Glockenbach and on Schellingstr. near LMU.
